Two arrested after early Thursday morning police chase

FORT WAYNE, Ind.  (WPTA21) — Two people were arrested after a chase that ended with a man running away from the vehicle.

The Fort Wayne Police Department said the chase began around 12:30 Thursday morning in the area of East Rudisill Boulevard and South Hanna Street. A detective noticed a car that believed had a stolen license plate on it.

When the detective tried to stop the vehicle, the department said the driver took off. The driver led police on a chase that ended on Autumn Lane by Oxford Street.

Police say the driver and passenger got out of the vehicle. The driver, identified as Christopher Zerler, took off running and the female passenger went to the ground.  Police were able to eventually find the driver laying on the ground between buses in the trees in McMillen Park.

The female passenger told police the driver pulled out a gun when they were driving and put it behind the seat. Police determined the passenger, identified as Bandy Howard, had an active warrant for her arrest out of Allen County.

Zerler was preliminarily charged with felon carrying a handgun, possession of methamphetamine, using a vehicle to resist law enforcement, fleeing law enforcement and leaving the scene of an accident.

Howard was preliminarily charged with possession of methamphetamine.
