Valentine’s Day spending expected to reach record-breaking level

(WPTA21) — For many couples, Valentine’s Day is usually an expensive gift giving day. This year’s spending, however, is expected to reach unprecedented levels.

According to the National Retail Federation, this year’s spending is expected to be a record-breaking $20.7 billion,  or an average of $162 a person.

The survey found men will spend a little over $229 dollars, while women come at 98 dollars.

Despite the heightened spending, the survey found fewer people will be celebrating this year. Only 51 percent of people plan to participate, compared to 55 percent last year.

The love is also going to pets. 20 percent of people surveyed say they plan to grab a gift for their furry loved ones.
