FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA21) — A special celebration Thursday morning at the Rescue Mission in Fort Wayne, and our cameras were there to capture it.

Sandra Wright, also known as the cake lady, has been delivering cakes to the mission for 24 years. Every month, she makes a cake and then drops it off for the men at the mission who have birthdays.

She always changes up the flavor too. This month is was cherry, which she thought was appropriate for Valentine’s Day.

Wright also recently celebrated her own birthday. She is 70 years young. Thursday’s event was a celebration of that, and her more than two decades of service to a cause that she’s passionate about.

“I just felt like I need to do something for people rather than think about myself,” Wright said. “I was going through depression and I needed something to take my mind off of it, and from there is just blossomed and I’ve enjoyed doing this and keep coming back. I said I’d do this until I can’t anymore.”

Tonight at five, we’ll hear more from Sandra and from the president of the Rescue Mission about what her kind gesture means to the men staying there.
