FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA21) — A couple faces criminal charges after police say they were passed out in a car while a child was in the vehicle.
Megan Gawthrop and Bryce Carrier were arrested Tuesday. A Probable Cause affidavit states the arrest comes after police responded to a Fort Wayne Walmart on a report of a person down in a vehicle.
When an officer arrived just after midnight, he saw a vehicle parked with its engine running and lights on. The windshield wipers were on at high speed.
The document shows the officer saw a man passed out in the passenger seat and a woman passed out in the driver’s seat. There was a 2-year-old child on the woman’s lap playing with the steering wheel, turn signals and wiper blades.
When the officer opened the door, the affidavit states the couple woke up, shocked to see the officer. The officer had the man get out of the vehicle, and he asked how much heroin he used.
Police say the man later admitted that he and the driver had used a small amount of heroin prior to driving to Walmart.
Gawthrop was preliminarily charged with neglect of a dependent and operating while intoxicated. Carrier was preliminarily charged with neglect of a dependent.
