KENDALLVILLE, Ind. (WPTA21) — A man is in custody after a standoff that went into the early morning hours.

Kendallville Police say the standoff started around 7:30 Monday night when they responded to a call for a welfare check near the intersection of Riley Street and Dowling Street.

When police made contact with the person inside, they say he pulled out a gun and slammed the door on police. They were able to make contact with the man over the phone, but they say he fired shots at police as he barricaded himself in the home.

Neighbors tell ABC21 the situation made them nervous.

“The kids and stuff that are around here a lot and the school right there. It’s kind of a crazy thing to go on right beside it, but it’s one of those things that just happened I guess,” Michael Baldwin said.

The Indiana State Police SWAT team came in for assistance, and after several hours at around 2 am, they were able to get the person out of the home.

The man has been placed under arrest, and will likely face charges.
