HOWE, Ind. (WPTA21) – The site that has been home to one of the last military academies in Indiana is in need of a buyer. Asking price: $4 million.
Howe Military Academy announced in March that it would close down following the current school year. Financial considerations and declining enrollment were primary reasons for the decision to cease operations.
With the end of the school year comes the end of 135 years of history. Howe Military Academy welcomed its first students in 1884 (it was then known as Howe Grammar School), and has turned out more than 5,000 graduates over the ensuing decades.
The majority of the sprawling campus is being offered for purchase as one unit. Those 63 acres include 26 buildings with more than 250-thousand square feet of interior space; a paved road system; and a solar power farm with a 9-year lease.
The list price is $4 million.
The Zacher Company is handling the sale. It notes future uses could include educational, religious, retirement and recreational possibilities.
The property is located north of Fort Wayne and east of South Bend, off State Road 9 and not far from I-90.
