Carroll High School student recognized for helping save choking friend

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA21 )– A Carroll High School student is being called a “hero” after saving a classmate from choking during lunch.

Marissa Kozel who received the school’s “extra mile award”. This comes after Marissa says she noticed one of her friends started choking last Wednesday.

She says as a lifeguard she’s trained and knew exactly what to do. After the third chest compression, her friend spit out the food and was able to breathe again.

Marissa says he was appreciative and was back to joking around at the lunch table soon after. She says she hopes other people will be inspired to learn the lifesaving technique themselves.

Marissa says this isn’t the first time she’s helped someone. She says her little sister’s friend once choked on a granola bar and she was able to help them as well.
