Officer cleared of wrongdoing after shooting armed robbery suspect during chase

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA21) — A Huntington police officer has been cleared after wounding an armed robbery suspect in late May.

The Huntington Police Department said the incident happened on May 25 when police responded to an armed robbery at Save On Liquor.

While searching the area, an officer, later identified as Darius Hillman, located the suspect, who ran away. The officer chased the suspect and ended up shooting him during an encounter. The suspect, later identified as Anthony Wilburn, did not sustain any life-threatening injuries.

Hillman was placed on administrative leave until the Huntington County prosecutor could review the case. The prosecutor determined Hillman responded reasonably and committed no criminal offenses when he acted to protect himself, his fellow officers, and the community.
