Renewal of Jefferson Pointe underway, including construction of new road

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA21) – Construction has begun on a major redevelopment effort at Jefferson Pointe, the southwest-side shopping complex that announced plans for big changes last year.

The project will include what operators call a “pedestrian-friendly main street” bisecting the shopping center. It will allow vehicle traffic and parking where, until now, only foot traffic was permitted.

The street will connect the drop-off roadway at the AMC Theatres to the central fountain, then continue to the northern and southern parking lots.

“Our vision for revitalizing Jefferson Pointe is to create a more vibrant and appealing environment for our guests and tenants and reestablish it as the premier shopping, dining, and entertainment destination in Fort Wayne,” said Jeff McMahon, managing partner at RED, the development company that owns the property.

The multi-million dollar enhancement effort also includes lighting upgrades indoors and outside, new artwork, fresh paint and repairs to the existing concrete and asphalt.

“The new touches will enhance the ambiance of Jefferson Pointe and ensure it remains a place where families and friends can gather, socialize and enjoy increased accessibility to top-notch shopping and dining,” McMahon said. “The improved access, visibility and convenient parking will make Jefferson Pointe even more attractive to new, best-in-class tenants.”

Jefferson Pointe and Glenbrook Square, a traditional indoor mall, are the two largest shopping centers in Fort Wayne. Both have been looking at ways to entice shoppers and buck national trends that have led to vacancies and mall closures.

More than 60 shops and restaurants are currently tenants at Jefferson Pointe, officials said. They include Von Maur, Victoria’s Secret, Old Navy and ULTA.
