INDIANAPOLIS (WPTA21) — A new report shows Indiana’s unemployment rate is at the level is was in April 2018.
The report by the Indiana Department of Workforce Development states Indiana’s unemployment rate is at 3.4 percent compared to the national rate of 3.7 percent. The rate is among the lowest in the Midwest, with only Wisconsin having lower rates.
The department said the unemployment rate reflects the number of unemployed people seeking employment within the prior four weeks. This is included in the labor force.
Indiana’s labor force decreased by 6,608 over the previous month. This was caused by a decrease of 1,274 unemployed residents and a decrease of 5,334 employed residents.
The department said the decrease is primarily due to losses in the Leisure and Hospitality and Trade Transporation and Utilities sectors. They were partially offset by gains in the Private Educational and Health Services and the Financial Activities sectors.
The department said the total labor force is at 3.38 million. Indiana has a 64.6 percent labor force participation rate, compared to the national rate of 63 percent.
