One dead in Huntington County crash

HUNTINGTON COUNTY, Ind. (WPTA21) — A man is dead after crashing into a drain culvert Sunday afternoon.

The Huntington County Coroner said the crash happened around 2:45 Sunday afternoon in the area of State Road 3, south of Shafer Road.

Donald Thomas, 67 of Hartford City, was driving a 1997 Dodge pickup truck when for some reason he drove off the left side of the road. Thomas went through the grass, hitting a drain culvert. He continued to the opposite side of the road, before the truck stopped in the grass.

A deputy witnessed the crash, as he was dispatched to a call of Thomas driving slowly along the road. Before the crash, the coroner said the deputy unsuccessfully attempted to pull Thomas over.

Deputies extricated Thomas, attempting CPR until medics arrived. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

While an autopsy is pending, the coroner’s office believes Thomas may have experienced a medical incident. The investigation is ongoing as of the time of this report.
