FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA21) – The mayor’s race is heating up with Republican Tim Smith being formally endorsed by the city firefighter’s union.

Will it have a big impact on the race?

For the first time in 16 years, the professional firefighters Local 124 Political Action Committee is backing somebody for Fort Wayne mayor.

Their choice, Republican businessman Tim Smith, who is trying to snatch the office from the grip of incumbent Democrat Tom Henry.

“The health and safety of our firefighters is paramount. both physically and mentally, and we believe Tim Smith possesses the tools necessary to provide the highest level of service to the citizens of Fort Wayne,” said Jeremy Bush, the president of the local union.

“I think most of us grow up respecting firefighters,” said Smith.

The prevailing wisdom in politics is that unions generally support Democratic Party candidates.

Smith is glad he’s bucking the trend.

“When they’re on the job and when they commit to a cause, my campaign in this situation, they’re hard workers, I’m absolutely expecting that they’re going to work hard for Smith for Mayor,” Smith said.

Mayor Henry provided a statement, saying, “Although I did not anticipate the endorsement of the IAFF Local 124 Political Action Committee, I remain committed to working together with our firefighters. Our collective focus is and shall remain on the safety of our residents.”

Election Day for the mayor’s race is Tuesday, November 5th.
