ROANOKE, Ind. (WPTA21) – United Autoworkers Local 2209 will go on strike at midnight after its contract with General Motors expired Saturday night.

The union is advising workers of strike-related benefits provided by the UAW and has published a schedule of picket line duties for those working any of the three shifts at the GM Fort Wayne Assembly.

“We stood up for General Motors when they needed us most. Now we are standing together in unity and solidarity for our Members, their families and the communities where we work and live,” said UAW Vice President Terry Dittes.

Following a formal meeting of the GM Council consisting of local union leaders, the UAW announced the membership is going on strike at midnight Sunday to secure:

  • Fair Wages
  • Affordable Healthcare
  • Our Share of Profits
  • Job Security
  • A Defined Path to Permanent Seniority for Temps

All told, about 49,000 workers are expected to strike across the country.

Additionally, a Bargaining Committee Report released one week ago explained to members why certain information is being withheld during the flurry of negotiations.

On Sept. 3, the UAW announced it would focus its attention foremost on General Motors when its contract with the “Big 3 “automakers expired on Sept. 14.

“(GM CEO) Mary Barra said from the outset of these talks that we will stand up as we tackle a changing industry. We are ready to stand strong for our future,” said United Autoworkers President Gary Jones. “We are focused. We are prepared and we are all ready to stand up for our members, our communities and our manufacturing future.”

A similar situation unfolded four years ago, when the previous labor agreement expired. Then, a deal was reached in the final moments.
