‘Christmas on Broadway’ to return for 15th annual celebration

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA21) – A 40-foot Colorado Blue Spruce will be the centerpiece of the 15th “Christmas on Broadway” celebration, with fireworks and a tree-lighting set to take place at 5:30 p.m. on Nov. 22.

U.S. Sen. Todd Young will do the honors as the tree is illuminated. ABC21 will air its afternoon and early evening newscasts live from Broadway Plaza, where the festivities will take place.

“We are so proud of this family-oriented event which, 15 years ago, started off as a neighborhood gathering with a mere 150 attendees, to what has now become a symbol of the beginning of Fort Wayne’s holiday season, with thousands of people gathering on the Broadway Plaza and thousands more watching on television,” said law partners Steve Shine and Tom Hardin of Shine & Hardin, LLP, the organizers of the event since its inception.

Young, Indiana’s senior U.S. Senator, follows in the tradition of prominent elected officials to light the lights, with Gov. Eric Holcomb and Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry recently taking on that role.

Radio station 103.9 “Sunny FM” will simulcast the event.

Sponsors include Prairie Farms, Lake City Bank, Sweetwater, St. Joseph Hospital (part of the Lutheran Health Network), Trinity English Lutheran Church, and a new addition, the Fort Wayne Komets.

Attendees at Christmas on Broadway will be treated to holiday beverages provided by Prairie Farms, which will include hot chocolate and eggnog.

“These wonderful community sponsors make it possible for families, who may not otherwise have the opportunity to enjoy the holiday season, to participate in the holiday celebration right in the heart of their neighborhood,” said Shine and Hardin.

In addition to the lighting of the tree, visitors will be able to take part in other family friendly activities, all free of charge, including a visit and photo opportunity with Santa and Mrs. Claus, refreshments, rides on the Polar Express train and the chance to see and pet a live reindeer.
