SIOUX CITY, Iowa (WPTA21) – Trent Salsma’s 25 yard touchdown pass to Connor Niles on Morningside’s first offensive play of overtime pushed the top NAIA top ranked Mustangs past eighth ranked two time defending national champ Saint Francis 34-28 in overtime Saturday in an NAIA semifinal playoff game.
Salsma threw two touchdown passes in the first few minutes of the game to put USF on it’s heels, but quarterback Matt Crable brought the Cougars back with three touchdown passes, and P.J. Dean’s one yard run in fourth quarter tied the game and forced overtime.
USF failed to score on it’s first overtime possession, missing a field goal, and Salsma’s touchdown pass ended the game right after that.
Saint Francis finishes 10-3, while 14-0 Morningside advances to meet Benedictine for the national championship Dedember 15th in Daytona Beach, Florida
