FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA21) — The Komets gave themselves a little bit of breathing room on Wednesday night.
Fort Wayne erupted for four goals in the first, as the Komets beat the Wings 5-1. A Kalmazoo win would have placed both teams in a tie for third in the Central Standings, but now the Komets hold a four-point lead over Kalamazoo.
Josh Elmes started the scoring with a goal on the first shot of the game, and the Komets got two more quick scores later in the first on goals from Jake Kamrass and Shawn Szydlowski.
Kalmazoo got its lone score from Luke Sandler later in the first, but shortly thereafter Ryan Lowney answered to put Fort Wayne back up three.
Neither team scored in the second (the Komets had just four shots in the period). Justin Hodgman added a little insurance with a goal at the 13:47 mark of the third.
