Komets squander early three-goal lead, fall to Fuel

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA21) — The Komets will have to wait to punch that ticket to the postseason.

Fort Wayne, needing just one point to clinch a playoff spot, fell to the visiting Indy Fuel 5-3 on Wednesday night.

The Komets quickly jumped out to a three-nothing lead, getting goals from Jamie Schaafsma, Mason Baptista, and Shawn Szydlowski in the first 8:41 of play.

The Fuel got their first goal shortly after that, a score from Woody Hudson. Then some Komets high-sticking penalties (a double minor on Anthony Petruzelli and minor on Szydlowski) gave the Fuel some 5-on-3 chances, and Indy capitalized with goals from Travis Brown and Logan Nelson.

In the third, the Fuel moved in front with Matt Rupter’s goal, and added an empty netter from Ryan Rupert, securing the win.

The Komets play at Indy on Friday night.
